a family friendly festival with fun workshops, displays, discussions & demonstrations, live entertainment, artisan stalls, multi prize raffle and much more
Boonah’s World Environment Day Festival is on Saturday July 21, from 9am to 4pm at the Outlook, Boonah. Showcasing a huge array of exhibitors, workshops, demonstrations, art and performances, there’s inspiration for everyone. A wonderland of original designs created by eco-artists from materials which normally make their way to landfill will impress the eco conscious, showcasing their successful transformation from trash into treasure. Combining the art of recycling and imagination, they create practical and beautiful bespoke homewares and artwork, jewellery and clothing. Free workshops include Polynesian floral garlands, magic tie dye, treasures from kitchen plastics, African drumming sessions, as well as native wildlife with the Australian Bush Buddies. There are loads of informative displays, including demonstrations on making plarn (plastic yarn), plus weaving plastic packaging into fashionable purses. Live entertainment includes an acrobatic display, African drumming, the Gypsy Caravan tribal dancers and loads of local musicians plus a bush poet. Christopher Trotter’s Stinky Bill will be there with one hundred trees to give away, and two artworks will be created on the day, including a plasma cut fire pit which will be won by some lucky person in the multi prize raffle. Three discussions will cover the solar PV with storage revolution – the pros and cons of going off-grid; sustainable housing – good design for a changing climate; and electric vehicles – shifting even more away from our fossil fuel addiction. Lots of eco friendly products will be available such as reusable water bottles, keep cups, bees wax wraps, shopping and produce bags, stainless steel straws, solar lights, natural soaps and personal care items. Visitors can learn about composting, worm farming and permaculture with great displays and information. There’ll be a huge range of plants to choose from, as well as alpaca poo for the garden. Water is on tap and our coffee baristas will be offering a discount for people bringing their own reusable cups. All organic waste will be collected and composted, rather than going to landfill to feed bacteria and produce unacceptable levels of methane. Look out for Madam Mulch who will chat to guests about where to put their ‘waste’ and be point them in the direction of our specially designated bins for the compostable crockery and cutlery and food scraps. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the multi prize raffle has over $1,500 in prizes, including a Mt Barney Lodge stay, local wine, artwork (upcycled of course), a local produce hamper, local gift vouchers, and many other great prizes. Entry is via a gold coin. For full program details, see online at boonahboss.blogspot.com or the facebook event page.
