Young Kiwi spreads wings
IN a season best described as inconsistent for the Ipswich Jets Colts, there has been at least one consistent factor.
It is the continued improvement of winger Alex Mosegi.
Mosegi only joined the Jets from New Zealand in February and struggled to show his true value at first.
He was cut from the Colts squad at the start of the season but earned a reprieve through injury to another player.
Since then, coach Mark Bishop has been increasingly impressed with his contributions and he has gone from borderline pick to first name on the list each weekend.
"He has been our best back every week," Bishop said.
Which begs the question why he was overlooked for the original squad?
"He was here late (for pre-season training) and was a rugby boy who had played a bit of league.
"He took a little bit of time to adjust. But he smashes his hit-ups and in defence he makes them pay.
"We've just got to get him to talk to his inside man."
Mosegi's communication skills will no doubt continue to improve as he further settles into the Jets' way.
The 19-year-old left Christchurch in New Zealand at the start of the year at the urging of his father who wanted him to give his talent a better chance to shine.
Mosegi joined Ipswich because his cousin Joe Mika plays for the club.
"I just wanted a change of scenery and to play league in Australia," Mosegi said.
"Hopefully I can make the Queensland Cup side further down the track. I've still got a lot to learn about the game."
That much was obvious when he first showed up at Jets' training.
"It was real different," Mosegi said. "Especially coming from New Zealand.
"It's a way different ball game.
"It's much faster and more physical. And especially with the training."
He feels he has caught up since then and his coach, teammates and opponents would agree.
The seventh-placed Ipswich Jets Colts play last-placed Wests at the North Ipswich Reserve at 1pm.
