Young Ipswich racer back on Qld podium

MOTORSPORT: For the second season in a row, Ipswich teenager Casey O'Connell has finished on the podium in the Queensland Junior Sedan title.

His latest success was at the recent meeting at Rockhampton Speedway.

After finishing third in last season's Queensland title, O'Connell had high expectations for another successful run.

Despite not coming away with the win, O'Connell and the team were still pleased with the night's outcome.

O'Connell started the 20-lap Queensland title decider from pole position, alongside his main rival and former Queensland champion Casey Collins.

Both drivers were equal on points after winning their three heat races and had to be separated by quickest lap time overall during the heat races.

In almost a case of déjà vu, after leading the opening 10 laps, Daihatsu Charade pilot O'Connell made a small error. Collins, who had a better run in the corner, slipped by for the race lead.

Moments after the lap had been completed, the yellow light came on and the ensuing restart saw O'Connell line up from position two.

A handful of restarts peppered the closing stages of the race.

Despite O'Connell trying different tactics at the restarts to regain the lead - and having a few car issues, including losing use of his brake pedal - he had to settle for second place. However, it was an improvement on last season's results.

"We would've liked to come away with the win, but we are pleased with finishing second,” said the 15-year-old said, who's now in his fourth season of Junior Sedans.

"It was a great track and to race with Casey (Collins) like we did in the feature race was a lot of fun, and we'll be back next season to attempt to go one better on this season's effort.”

O'Connell is also looking forward to contesting the Australian title at Darwin's speedway from June 28-30.

Meanwhile, Casey's older brother Cody has continued his good form this season with a third-place finish in the latest round of the Qld Wingless Sprint Club Championship at Archerfield Speedway.

It was Cody's sixth podium finish of the season, which consists of two wins.

The season continues for Casey on March 17 when he returns to Maryborough Speedway.

He's one of the leading contenders in both the current Maryborough Speedway and Kingaroy Speedway point scores.

Cody will contest the next round of the Queensland Club Championship, also at Kingaroy Speedway on March 17.
