World record marathon effort an incredible feat

TO be able to run quick and keep that pace up for a long period takes a super athlete.

That's exactly what Kenyan Olympic gold medallist Eliud Kipchoge is.

Kipchoge has smashed the world record by winning the Berlin Marathon in a time of 2.01.39. His time has taken more than one minute off the previous mark.

Kipchoge started the race with a 2.43 for the first kilometre, 2.51 for the halfway kilometre and still had enough energy to run the last kilometre in a staggering 2.50 minutes.

By running this quick, his opposition was left in his wake.

The second placegetter was a mammoth 4.43 seconds behind him.

Another outstanding feature of the feat was that he ran every kilometre in under three minutes.

Terrific battles

IT'S grand final qualifiers this weekend in both the NRL and AFL.

Four teams remain in both but only two will progress to their respective Grand Finals next weekend.

In the NRL, I see the Roosters being too strong for the Rabbits and the Storm will just get over the top of an injured Sharks outfit.

In the AFL, I see the best team of 2018 - the Tigers - being too strong for the Magpies.

The Demons will travel to Western Australia to defeat the Eagles.

Next week is also Awards week with the Dally M and Brownlow both being presented to the best and fairest players in their respective codes.

Souths hooker Damien Cook might just edge out a fast finishing Valentine Holmes.

Melbourne's Max Gawn is my tip to topple Tom Mitchell for the Brownlow.

Quick thoughts

HERO of the week 1: Nikki Cox, from Ipswich City FC, after being crowned Player of the Year in the Women's Premier League. A grand final victory this weekend would make the week extra special.

Hero of the week 2: Winx once again showed everyone that she deserves to be mentioned with the Greatest in racing by demolishing his rivals for his 27th straight victory.

Villians of the week: The Wallabies must start to find some form after yet another loss, this time to Argentina. They have now slipped to No 7 in the world.

Did you know? South Sydney champion of the 60s and 70s Eric Simms kicked a phenomenal 86 field goals in his 203 game career.

Bomber's best: Avilius won like a good thing and better races are ahead for him.

This week, get on the Tigers and Demons to win their respective qualifying finals.
