Woolworths pulls racist Aussie singlet from shelves

WOOLWORTHS have pulled hundreds of singlets from their shelves after being hammered for racism.

"The singlet was not one we ordered. It was delivered to us in error and should never been allowed on our shelves,'' Woolworths told Greens' MP Adam Bandt and APN.

"We will review our processes to ensure this sort of error cannot happen again. As soon as we were made aware we immediately withdrew the product from our shelves."

"The sentiment expressed on the singlet does not reflect the views of Woolworths.

"Woolworths has a policy of 'Doing the Right Thing' which means we believe in fostering an environment where everyone is treated with dignity, courtesy and respect.''

The singlet which states "if you don't love it, leave," underneath a print of the Australian flag was branded as racist by customers.

Cairns Woolworths customer George Craig posted a photo of the singlet on Twitter on Monday.

"Cairns, selling racist singlets for everyday low prices! #racist," the tweet read.

The singlet has already attracted plenty of criticism online.

Greens MP Adam Bandt almost immediately took to Facebook to call on Woolworths to remove the product from its shelves.

"Just seen on Twitter: Woolworths in Cairns are reportedly selling these singlets...Divisive and ridiculous -- these should be pulled immediately. Team Bandt," the post read.

The shirt controversy follows similar backlash to a design released by Aldi for Australia Day 2014.

Their shirt read "Australia Established 1788".

It was withdrawn from shelves following racism claims.
