UPDATE: Police investigating fatal traffic crash

UPDATE: A number of factors will be considered in the investigation of a single-vehicle accident that killed a 20-year-old Cannonvale woman at Strathdickie last night.

Senior Sergeant Nathan Blain of the Whitsunday Police said investigators were at the scene of the crash again early this morning to assess the area.

"Investigators are looking at a number of different options including driver error, weather conditions and road design," he said.

"We don't want to say it's one thing straight away because we're still in the very early stages."

Preliminary information suggests it was about 9.50pm yesterday when the vehicle the woman was driving left the Gregory Cannon Valley Road and crashed into a power pole.

The woman was the sole occupant of the car and died at the scene.

A report is currently being prepared for the coroner.

The car has been removed from the scene by police and will be examined by motor vehicle inspectors to determine whether there were any mechanical contributing factors.

Some previous media reports suggested the woman was from the Sunshine Coast, but Sr Sgt Blain confirmed she was a local resident.

He said at this stage her name could not be released.

He also noted this was a tragic reminder to drive to the conditions, with ongoing rain in the Whitsundays over the past week.

"Take care wherever you're going," he said.

EARLIER: Police said a 20-year-old Cannonvale woman died after a single vehicle crash at Strathdickie overnight.

They said preliminary information indicates at about 9.50pm yesterday the vehicle the woman was driving left the Gregory Cannon Valley Rd and crashed into a power pole.

The Cannonvale woman, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating.

This will be the third fatal crash in the region in almost a week.

On Monday a 37-year-old New South Wales man died in a crash between a motorcycle and a ute about 3pm on the Bruce Hwy south of Mackay.

Then on July 15 police confirmed a 43-year-old woman died after a three-vehicle crash north of Mackay near The Leap.

*Another Queensland Police Service (QPS) statement said the woman involved in the crash was from the Sunshine Coast, but a QPS spokesman has confirmed this morning the woman who died was from Cannonvale.
