Winners to return for ocean swim
TWO Olympians will compete in the second annual Evans Head ocean swim next month.
Melissa Gorman returns after winning the inaugural event last year and it will be one of her final hit-outs before the London Olympic Games.
Local swimmer Jacqueline Freney will also compete ahead of the 2012 Paralympics in London.
Queensland swimmer Jack Burnham was the first male across the line last year in the 2km swim and earlier won the 750m swim.
"We're very happy to have both winners from last year back again," event co-ordinator Ray Adams said.
"Melissa is in full throttle with her preparation for the Olympics so it was nice of her to take the time out of her schedule to come back."
Adams hopes the event will attract more numbers after the Byron Bay ocean swim was cancelled because of dangerous surf conditions.
"It's the last swim of the season and we'll be on no matter what," he said.
"If the conditions aren't favourable we can do the swim in the river as an alternative.
"We'd hope that the people who didn't get the chance to swim at Byron Bay will consider coming to Evans Head.
"We have a three- to five-year plan on how to keep improving the swim and we're right on track."
The event is again being sponsored by the Evans Head Bowling Club with an $800 dash for cash at the Evans Head Aquatic Centre.
The dash for cash will be held on Saturday, June 9, with the ocean swim the following day.
With the Evans Head-Casino Surf Life Saving Club celebrating its 90th anniversary, all money raised from the race will be donated to the club.
