WINE REVIEW: A toast to the fallen for Anzac Day

ANZAC Day. The day when we and our Kiwi brethren forget all the trans-Tasman rivalries and pause to remember thousands of young men shipped across the seas to a foreign shore, only to be part of one of the great martial tragedies of all time at the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey.

The battle over many months has become such a formative event of the then two emerging nations and it also saw the rise of Kemal Ataturk, known as the father of modern Turkey.

This edition pays homage to the wines of New Zealand, Australia and, of course, Turkey.

Giesen Estate, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, NZ, 2016

Sauv blanc is the foot solider of the NZ wine industry and this wears its Silver Fern with plenty of pride. Jasmine double cream, blackberry leaf, grapefruit, greengage and the right amount of passionfruit seeds sees this rise higher in the ranks than many mid-priced offerings. Available at major retailers.

Richly fruited yet finishing with a black olive savoury quality for balance with fine gravelly tannin. See for stockists.
