Win has England women on top in Ashes series

ENGLAND increased its lead in the women's Ashes series after dominating the first one-dayer at the MCG yesterday; an unbeaten 64 from Arran Brindle setting up a seven-wicket win.

Brindle needed only 79 balls and was ably supported by Lydia Greenway (69 not out off 94) and Charlotte Edwards (41 off 57).

The visitors, who won the only Test in Perth, cruised to their target of 210 in the 47th over.

Holly Ferling (pictured) and Erin Osborne (1-29 each off seven overs) were the pick of the Aussie bowlers.

Earlier, Alex Blackwell (82 not out off 121) and Ellyse Perry (65 not out off 78) led the way for Australia.

Jenny Gunn (1-30) and Danielle Hazell (0-30) were England's best with the ball, bowling their allotted 10 overs each.

The next match will be at the MCG again on Thursday where Australia will have to win to stay alive in the mixed-format series.
