Why Ipswich club athlete struck gold twice

"JUST training really.''

With those three words, twin gold medallist Montanna McAvoy summed up why she won two golds, set meet records and qualified for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

McAvoy said with the training she'd done and recent lead-up performances, she knew she would be up there.

"It's just been ongoing,'' the year 12 student said of the extra work she's put in on her way to winning two under-18 national titles.

The year 12 Ipswich Girls' Grammar School student enjoyed her 3km victory the most, knowing how tough the race was.

She was back in Innisfail, North Queensland, today spending her holidays where she grew up before relocating to Ipswich. Thankfully, her family missed the impact of Cyclone Debbie.

But like the tropical storm that swept across Queensland's coast, McAvoy blew away her opponents in Sydney.

She's waiting for confirmation of her selection in Australia's team for the Commonwealth Youth Games in July.

With no 2km steeplechase offered, she'll concentrate on the 3km where she's already set two qualifying times.
