Bicycle is one of a kind

GREGORY Weller's modern day penny farthing can't do wheelies, but it sure is useful.

The Mackay resident regularly uses the bike to do chores around town, from picking up groceries to returning library books.

He said the bike had kept him fit and healthy since his father-in-law built it as a wedding present.

"It really works you out because you're practically holding yourself there, and you need to indicate where you're going to others," Mr Weller said.

"You need to get off it when you stop, so I don't really like stopping.

"When I started I would scooter push on one pedal but now I've put a rack on the back that I can stand on."

Mr Weller said he often received looks of surprise while riding around town.

"I used to occasionally ride it from South Mackay to Paget to work," he said.

"One night I went past Outback Jack's and a little girl said 'look at that man on the bike' and before I knew it the whole restaurant was looking.

"One of the most common questions I get asked is if I can (do a) wheelie but it's just impossible."

With wife Crystal expecting the couple's first child in the near future, Mr Weller said he was keen to pass down his riding skills.

"As soon as I can get a helmet that fits, the baby will be on the bike behind me or in a bike trailer," he said.
