What you need to know about using Tinder
LOOKING to meet the love of your life? Ten million people across the world are turning to the dating app Tinder to connect with that someone 'special'.
The app has been in the headlines of late after the tragic death of New Zealand woman Warriena Wright who recently fell from a Gold Coast balcony to her death. Gable Tostee has been charged with her murder.
The two had met on Tinder.
Rockhampton man Dan Harkin yesterday gave outsiders an insight into the world of Tinder.
He's been using it for about eight months and said it was helping connect plenty of Central Queenslanders. He said the app was based on looks.
"(The screen) comes up with a person's picture and you can swipe left if you don't think they're hot and swipe right if you like them," the 25-year-old said.
While it focuses on looks, it also lets you see the people that are within range to you, so if you like the look of each other, you can meet right away.
"I think it's human nature that you're going to go for the better looking person," Dan said.
"I haven't really met up with someone from Tinder, I've just been chatting."
The CQUniversity journalism student thinks that most guys are just on Tinder to chat or they have an agenda to hook up.
"You might not meet girls of substance (on Tinder)," Dan said.
But if you plan on meeting someone, Dan says you must be smart about it.
"If you meet someone, go to a public place," he said.
"I usually talk to someone first on Tinder and don't give them my Facebook profile; I give my phone number instead and I think it's safer."
But while you can sift through the endless photos of potential romances, Dan still thinks that meeting someone the old-fashioned way, face to face, is always the better option.
"Going out and meeting people is always going to be better than online," Dan said. "With internet there's a sense of anonymity; you can be who you want.
"So meet someone at the gym or through sports or something."
Tinder is a mobile phone app that allows people to find others in their area interested in a relationship. The app is based on appearance and users can scroll through photos until they find a match.
- 10 million users worldwide
- Average age is 27
- Users log in about 11 times a day
DAN'S TOP RULES
- An observation he's made is that the closer the photo of a girl is, the wider they'll be in person
- Be smart, meet in public
- Chat to them first for a while; try to get a sense of who they are
- Don't let their looks blur who they really are
