What Games athletes did when not competing

THE obvious highlight of Alyce Stephenson's Commonwealth Games debut was standing on the weightlifting platform at Carrara Sports Arena on April 5.

But with her competitive duties over on the first day, the 27-year-old grasped the opportunity to immerse herself in the Games as a fan.

"I managed to watch like eight different sports, I thought yep, let's make the most of it,” Stephenson said.

"As athletes we got free tickets. I really enjoyed the boxing and beach volleyball the most.

"We got to the athletics, the rugby, the netball, basketball . . . most of them were games with Aussie competitors in them.

"It kept our days filled. It's something I was really looking forward to.”

Stephenson's favourite moment was the women's volleyball final. Australian duo Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho Del Solar finished runners-up to Canada in the gold medal match.

"Even though they came second, it was a great night,” she said.

"The Aussie boys had won (gold) earlier. I just remember, we had most of the girls from the weightlifting team go down and support. It was a really fun night.”

"I look back and it was all positive,” Stephenson added.

"The volunteers were all so polite and bubbly, and they were like that for the whole three weeks.

"I was so thankful for their help, they really made it for me.”
