Whale 'waving' at tourists exposed to 4.5m Facebook users

WITH just a click of a button the Fraser Coast has been exposed to more than 4.5 million people across the globe.

An image from whale watch operator Peter Lynch was submitted to the Tourism Fraser Coast's photo competition and put online.

Hervey Bay whale watching is the biggest drawcard for the region.

Tourism Fraser Coast started a competition for people to submit their best whale photos to win a trip to Kingfisher Bay Resort.

They were inundated with wonderful photos but one stood out from the rest.

Blue Dolphin Marine Tours operator Peter Lynch snapped a classic photo of tourists waving to the whale who appears to wave back.

It was posted to the Tourism Fraser Coast Facebook page and then posted by Tourism Australia.

Tourism Australia's Facebook page has more than 4.5 million likes, the biggest out of any country in the world.

Tourism Fraser Coast marketing co-ordinator Tas Webber said the publicity would attract more visitors to the region.

"It's huge, especially coming into whale season," he said. "We ended up having a lot of photos on Facebook from tourists who snapped their best moment."

Mr Lynch was proud to be able to promote the region.

"Whale watching, it's all about the region," he said.

Tourism Fraser Coast's Facebook page gained more than 2000 likes since the photo was posted globally.
