NOW the wet season is upon us the weather will become an unpredictable mix of steamy, hot days and torrential rain.

But just because the weather is sporadic it doesn't mean your exercise regime has to be.

City Fitness group instructor and personal trainer Mars Mau said the weather shouldn't hamper people in their efforts to shift their leftover Christmas kilos.

"Set yourself an achievable goal. You just have to go for it," Ms Mau said.

Although Ms Mau said joining a gym was a great option at this time of year because they could control the climate and keep the temperature down with air-conditioners, meaning weight loss goals could become a reality for people at home.

Running through some of her top weight-shedding exercises that could be done indoors, Ms Mau said any activity that got your pulse pumping was ideal for losing weight.

"Getting your heart rate up is probably the biggest key," Ms Mau said.

"Any cardiovascular exercise will help drop the weight."

Repetitive resistance training was a great indoor activity and, if you had a bit more room, skipping was also a great heart rate booster, she said.

"Crunchers are great - they will work your abdominal area, and doing the plank is great for your core and back as well," she said.

Traditional and run-of-the-mill exercises like push-ups and lunges were also a great indoor exercise.

Both exercises would increase your heart rate if done repeatedly, she said.

DIET IS KEY

Rainy and cold days can have some people reaching for sugary coffees and hot pies.

But City Fitness group fitness trainer and personal trainer Mars Mau said food temptation could be easily avoided.

"If you don't have it stocked in your fridge, you won't eat it," Ms Mau said.

"You do tend to get hungry a lot when it's rainy weather. But if you do crave something and are looking for food, it's better to have something but swap it for a healthy option like a piece of fruit."

Ms Mau has five years of fitness training under her belt and said diet was key.

"I always say 70% nutrition and 30% exercise... Cut out the white starchy carbs and lower your sugar (consumption)."
