"Western" man had throat slit in Thailand

THAI police are investigating the bizarre death of a western man whose throat was slit and body was found tied to a concrete pole in the ocean.

The man's body was discovered by a jetski driver who raised the alarm off Samae Beach. The dead man's throat had been slit, Asia One reports.

The man's name or nationality is still unknown. He was found wearing a diving suit and flippers.

More than 4.5 million Australians have travelled to Thailand in the past 10 years.

The 33-year-old Cambodian jetski driver who found the body told police he had been circling around the area to warn tourists against riding in the rocky area of the beach, Asia One also reports.

Samae Beach is located in Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district on Koh Larn, a small island of the Pattaya coast in Thailand's east. Its white, sandy beach with clear blue water is visited by 800 to 3000 people a day during its high season.

Muang Pattaya Police Station superintendent Pol Colonel Apichai Krobphetch called an urgent meeting yesterday morning to discuss the case.

Deputy Police Inspector Wattana Pradit said the case was expected to become a murder investigation.

"At the moment, we don't know his identity or even his nationality," Deputy Police Inspector Wattana Pradit said.

"All we can say is that the man is Caucasiasn and is around 173cm (5ft 6in) in height."

Officers went to the Ban Koh Larn area to gather more clues as a scuba diving team from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation and police returned to the scene to collect more evidence.

"We've put out a request to hotels, hostels and lodging houses to ask if any guests are missing," said police Superintendent Apichai Krobphetch.

"We've also asked foreign embassies to inform us if anyone reports somebody missing."
