LETTER: Well done Father Chris for giving us the facts

MAY I be among the first to congratulate Father Chris Riley for his recent letter (QT 21/7) about the treatment of Muslims in our society.

I believe he deserves particular congratulations for his observation, obviously based on direct experience, that the unwarranted abusive behaviour that some people in our society target at Muslims have made young Muslim people feel as though they do not belong and cannot leave their homes in safety.

I would add to Father Riley's observations that it is not only words of the wild eyed thugs in the Middle East who are responsible for the radicalisation of some of these Muslim young people. Being subject to abuse because of their beliefs and seeing their mothers and sisters physically assaulted on the street because they choose to identify themselves as Muslims at the hands of Australian thugs is major contributor to such radicalisation.

It would do the reputation of the other Christian clergy of the district no harm if they joined with Father Riley in this public condemnation of such behaviour either in these columns or in the QT online comments section where even now he is being set upon by the hatemongers.
