Weekend of family activities
IPSWICH residents looking for something to do after the excitement of New Year's Eve need not look too far.
A host of activities have been planned for the kiddies right up to grandma and grandad today and tomorrow, to help people welcome 2011 on a positive note.
The Workshops Rail Museum can start the younger generations on the right track with its special Day Out With Thomas and Friends event.
The biggest of its kind in Australia, the annual event includes daily activities and a chance to meet the Fat Controller and climb aboard Thomas the Tank Engine to explore his inner workings.
Thomas' workhorse buddies Edward, James, Donald, Douglas, Trevor the traction engine and George the steamroller will also be on show.
For the older crowd, heritage railway workshops tours are also available and leave regularly throughout the day.
Ipswich people are invited to take a closer look at the blacksmiths' furnaces, one-ton hammers and steam trains under maintenance.
All visitors must wear enclosed footwear.
Those interested in Ipswich's rail history might also like to travel out to Grandchester, where the local model train club is offering rides from 10am to 3pm tomorrow.
Covered footwear is essential for anyone heading to the Grandchester Model Train Club's grounds at 2 Ipswich Street.

If you prefer rocket power over steam, Willowbank Raceway is hosting round one of the ANDRA Pro Series Top Fuel and Top Alcohol dragsters.
The action starts tomorrow from 4pm, with main show qualifying from 5pm.
The racing continues at 2.30pm on Monday.
For a quiet time in the country, don't forget the Mulgowie Markets from 8am to 11am today.
The Lockyer Valley and Ipswich region's finest produce will be on show, along with arts, crafts and some impressive German wurst.
