We don't need another crossing: MP

MEMBER for Ipswich West Wayne Wendt said it would be hard to justify the cost of building a bigger bridge over Colleges Crossing, despite several floods this summer.

Mr Wendt said his office had received “less than a handful” of calls from residents asking why the State Government hadn't considered it.

Transport and Main Roads is part-way through a traffic study of Mt Crosby Road to see if it is capable of handling future demand.

“Because of the shape of the bank, the bridge would have to be 200 to 300 metres long and it would cost something like $20 million to build,” he said.

“I believe the majority of people would not support such an expense for those rare occasions where it is needed, bearing in mind that what we are seeing now is an exceptional rain period.”

Another release from Wivenhoe Dam will begin in days, after water levels subside in the lower Lockyer Creek.
