Waterworx swimmers in best form at nationals

WITH so many of his competitors achieving personal bests at national level, Waterworx Swim Club head coach Paul Sansby couldn't be happier with his junior brigade.

The recent Age Nationals in Sydney fulfilled another successful campaign for the Springfield-based club.

Waterworx was represented by Jesse Coplick, Mary McFerran, Lucy Bedford, Dylan Mason, Jared O'Hanlon and Sharne Tiller.

Jesse, 13, set personal bests in the 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 800m freestyle. She came second in the 200m butterfly final.

Mary, 14, came fourth in the 100m breaststroke final.

Lucy, 14, set personal bests in the 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly at her first national event, backing up from school events.

Seasoned 14-year-old competitor Dylan set a number of personal bests, including during his seventh place finish in the 1500m freestyle.

Jared and Sharne, both 18, gained valuable experience in their 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

Sansby was most impressed with Jesse, Lucy and Dylan.

"That's pretty fair swimming,'' he said of their national performances.

"We're pretty happy with them.

"We've had a transitional season where we've had a few juniors coming through, a few seniors have quit so hopefully this season now, we'll build on that again.''

However, as many of his Waterworx swimmers continue to train through the winter, Sansby encourages them to pursue other activities.

"I like them to do a couple of other sports as well,'' Sansby said. "They do cross country, some of the girls do netball and touch football, some of the boys do football.''

The next major event is the state shortcourse championships in Canberra in September.
