Waterworx swim squad already in hot form
SWIMMING: Having dedicated young competitors making representative teams, more commendable work from a loyal coaching colleague and seeing the benefits of a heated 50m pool.
Waterworx Swim Club head coach Paul Sansby is delighted how his Springfield-based squad is progressing as they prepare for a new summer season.
A number of his 35-40 strong squad have enjoyed success at recent Brisbane and Queensland Short Course Championships at the end of the winter season.
Among those are Mollie O'Callaghan, Douglas Weaver and Mercedes Siganto.
Mollie has been selected in the Queensland Short Course team competing at the annual series in Canberra early next month.
"That's her first time on that team because she's only just turned 14,'' Sansby said.
Douglas was chosen to represent Brisbane against Wide Bay and the Darling Downs and Gold Coast regions at last weekend's Patrons Shield meet. It was his first junior representative honour.
Douglas won the nine years 50m freestyle, came second in the 50m butterfly and third in the 50m backstroke. The Brisbane team won the Shield.
Mercedes was named captain of the Queensland Schools multi-class team for the nationals held recently in Tasmania. She won the 50m and 100m breaststroke in Hobart.
The trio led the Waterworx contingent which set a number of personal bests at the Brisbane and Queensland Short Course meets.
Mollie won or came second or third in all 10 of her 14 years events she swam across both competitions.
Douglas was second or third in his four nine years 50m events, having just moved up an age group.
Mercedes collected a win and second placing in her open multi-class events at the Brisbane Short Course Championships.
After finishing top 10 at the short course titles, Kaia Sugars finished third in last Saturday's 12 years Brisbane Swimming Association open water meet (2.5km) at Lake Kawana.
"They're doing very well,'' Sansby said of his group preparing for a new summer season.
Sansby works with the older club swimmers, assisted by the experienced Peter Cherry, who coaches most of the younger brigade.
"He's been with me for 25, 30 odd years,'' Sansby said of Cherry.
"He's doing a great job with those younger kids. He does all my development work. Credit all goes to him for that.''
While that partnership continues to yield terrific results, Sansby said another benefit was having an upgraded pool at the Waterworx Aquatic Lifestyle Centre.
"This is the first full season we've had the 50m pool heated so I think that made a little bit of difference,'' Sansby said.
"Having 50m heated water right through winter helped to some degree. The kids seemed to swim pretty well off of that.''
While more winter training was valuable, Sansby likes to give his swimmers 4-5 weeks off a year, including school holidays and major breaks like Christmas.
"The swim season is nearly endless,'' he said.
Sansby and Cherry are already planning their summer calendar with meets at Toowoomba and Bundaberg among those coming up.
The Waterworx coaches were still assessing whether to enter some swimmers at the state open water championships with a number of other competitions leading up to the annual Queensland championships in December.
