Washed up backpack sparks beach search for missing person

A MOFFAT Beach surfer who saw a backpack and shoes floating on the surface of the water has sparked a preliminary search and rescue mission this afternoon.

The surfer tipped police off about the floating items, which led to jet skis and a helicopter heading out to search for any potential missing persons.

While unable to find anybody, land-based police patrols of the Moffat Beach headland were also being conducted this afternoon.

A Water Police officer said nobody had been reported missing as of about 3.30pm, but the search had been conducted as a precautionary measure.

It was believed the gear had been washed into the water by today's increased tides.

If anybody has lost a backpack or items from around Moffat Beach at about 1.30pm this afternoon, police have asked them to contact the station on 5475 2449, so they can confirm the status of any potential missing persons.
