POLICE have closed the westbound lanes of the Warrego Highway as firefighters battle a serious grass fire near Grantham.

Fire crews were called to the scene around 3.25pm as more than 20 acres of grass burned near the Sandy Creek Bridge.

Police are encouraging drivers to take care in the region as thick smoke is affecting visibility.

Delays in excess of 40 minutes have been reported by motorists.

The eastbound lanes remain open however police have warned drivers to take extreme care with smoke from the blaze causing poor visibility.
