Wallabies Ioane fit to play against depleted Lions squad

BRITISH and Irish Lions Warren Gatland surprised many after his one-off call up of retired Welsh winger Shane Williams, 36, for the clash against the Brumbies in Canberra last night.

Now former England captain Will Carling has put his hand should the injury crisis worsen.

Taking to Twitter, the 47-year-old, who quit in 1998, posted: 'Message to Warren Gatland - "Pick me, Pick me" !! #lions #vintage #hasbeen #oldfart'

On a serious note, Wallabies winger Digby Ioane yesterday declared himself fit to play in Saturday's first Test in Brisbane after taking full part in training at Ballymore.

The 34 Test representative has not played since injuring his knee in the Queensland Reds' 27-13 loss to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein last month.

He had surgery when he arrived home to clean up damaged cartilage, and said his rehabilitation had gone well enough for him to feel he was ready to play, if selected.

"It's feeling good, I'll be ready for this weekend," Ioane, who will leave the Reds to join French club Stade Francais at the end of the Super Rugby season, said.

"I just had to do the little things first to get it right but now I'm right to go."
