The Voice leaves you longing for more... footy

OPINION: Reality television is barely based in reality if the latest episodes of The Voice are anything to go by.

My adorable grandmother had come to visit us and The Voice is her guilty pleasure.

She is a rugby league fanatic, so imagine my shock the first time she told me she wasn't watching Monday night league - she wanted to watch The Voice instead.

Tentatively I agreed to watch this inane show, not knowing what to expect - you see, I had successfully avoided viewing it before then.

Watching the judges is truly squirm-inducing.

Especially Delta Goodrem.

She bops along in her chair, trying not to act self conscious but not quite succeeding.

They all gush about their respective proteges like they are the next Barbara Streisand or Elvis Presley and let's just say, sometimes this could not be further from the truth.

A few of the contestants are gifted but others would have been better off sticking to a karaoke competition.

Joel Madden, who seems unable to express himself other than in the blandest, most repetitive terms possible, is forever leaping out of his chair, eyes wide, proclaiming that it's the most amazing thing he has ever heard.

Seal is also guilty of thinking average is incredible - from time to time Ricky Martin and Delta do at least give some criticism.

There is little real genuine critique or feedback, which was one of the things I enjoyed most about the similar program Australian Idol when it was still airing.

Give me the footy any day.
