Pisasale on Monday: Visit to our sister city

IT WAS an honour to travel to Nerima City, Japan, last week to represent the city and sign the Sister City Agreement and mark 20 years since the original signing of the agreement. The Ipswich-Nerima relationship is one of the most successful sister city relationships in Queensland, particularly with all the student exchanges we've had in that time. It's fantastic that we can expose our young people to international travel, and return the favour by welcoming Nerima's students to Ipswich.

It must be the season for 20-year celebrations as we officially celebrate the 20th anniversary of Ipswich City Council's Safe City Program this week. We are proud that our city has set the benchmark for CCTV networks for public spaces in Australia. Since its inception in 1994, more than 200 cameras have been installed and are fed to a state-of-the-art control room that is staffed 24 hours a day. We have delivered impressive results in reducing crime by early intervention and improving public safety and I would like to thank each and every person who has been involved in making Safe City a huge success.

Wear something red and join us at the Ipswich Mall this Friday for the 2014 Day for Daniel Walk. There will be a sausage sizzle, merchandise for sale and the Walk for Daniel, with the event starting at 9.30am. Come along and help raise funds for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, which helps educate children and adults on child safety and protection initiatives.

It's Pink Ribbon Day, a nationwide Cancer Council fundraising initiative to support women with cancer. In Australia, around 50 women are diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer every day. You can get involved by registering a Girls' Night In, donating online or simply purchasing a pink ribbon from a local retailer. Visit www.pinkribbon.com.au for details.

Well done to the winners of the 2014 Ipswich Poetry Feast who were awarded at a special presentation on Friday night. For details of the winners and more information about the competition visit http://www.ipswichpoetryfeast.com.au.

Karalee Childcare Centre celebrated its 20th anniversary on Friday. Congratulations and well done to all the team on 20 successful years.
