Mayor on Monday: Vision for a great city

THE City of Ipswich is more than just the CBD and is greater than the sum of its parts. Our vision of a city of centres including Rosewood, Brassall, Springfield, Goodna, Yamanto and in the future Ripley Valley, puts Ipswich in a strong position by providing residents and visitors with a diverse range of experiences. Each major suburban centre offers its own unique myriad of shopping and recreational attractions.

What a fantastic weekend at Queensland Raceway for the Coates Hire Ipswich 400. It is a highly anticipated sporting event, with not only the weekend of racing but all the events leading up to it. The Ipswich round of the V8 Supercar series brings thousands of visitors and millions of dollars to our economy.

Well done to the Happiness Cycle Team's Bicycle Network Program which was a huge success on Friday. BMX Champion and Olympic medallist Sam Willoughby was invited to come along to meet students and encourage cycling and fitness goals. A fantastic initiative.

It was an honour to congratulate Ipswich couple Andrew and Leona Walker, who took out the 2014 Campaign for Change by Wesley Mission last week. The Walkers run a free community football game Wednesday nights at their local park and are aiming to expand their Rise Above program which strives to break the cycle of self-harm and self-abuse.

Great to see Ipswich businesses, including Realway Property Consultants for encouraging this week's fundraiser to wear a yellow ribbon for Allison Baden-Clay and raise funds for her daughters. The fundraiser encourages us to wear yellow for Allison and strive to be kind which is an important message.

Last Thrusday Stumps Hotel celebrated two years since opening. Well done to the whole team, the venue is a great addition to the Top of Town precinct.

I would like to congratulate Willowbank couple Carmel and Dennis Lynch on their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple celebrated the milestone at the weekend.

Congratulations to Majors Denise and Rod Strong who are retiring from the Salvation Army after 44 years of service. Thank you for your years of service and hard work for the community.
