Melbourne Vixens make a surprise signing
MORE than 15 months after announcing her sporting retirement, Melbourne Vixens mid-courter Renae Ingles has committed to playing another Super Netball season next year.
Ingles, 32, is one of seven confirmed re-signings for the Vixens, who missed finals this year but are determined to return to them in 2019.
The wife of NBA star Joe Ingles, the wing defence retired from Adelaide Thunderbirds in May last year to move to the United States with her partner and their two young children.
However, an off-season return back to Melbourne resulted in a surprise call from the Vixens in May - who were looking to replace a pregnant Chloe Watson - and that led to Ingles starring across the final 10 games of the season and gaining Australian Diamonds squad selection."Six months ago I wouldn't have imagined I'd be signing another contract to play in 2019 with the Melbourne Vixens so it's very, very exciting," Ingles said.
"It ended up being a bit of a no-brainer because I've just enjoyed it so much being back in this environment in Victoria and as soon as I was offered a contact I jumped at it and Joe and the kids are really supportive as well."
Ingles will complete some of her pre-season training back in Utah with Joe, but has committed to be with the Vixens for all the "crucial parts".
Ingles joins Kate Moloney, Liz Watson, Jo Weston, Emily Mannix, Tegan Phillip and Kadie-Ann Dehaney as Vixens re-signings, with talks underway with potential new recruits.
Ingles said the club felt it was heading in the right direction despite losing the last three games this year to miss finals.
"We were really disappointed this year not making finals," she said.
"We feel like we have unfinished business and much more this group can achieve under Simone (McKinnis). So we're excited about pre-season kicking off later in the year and then starting to prepare for the 2019 season."
