Ben Roberts-Smith to promote Ipswich Hospital Foundation

VICTORIA Cross winner Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith will be a guest speaker at the Swich On charity dinner in Ipswich on Friday.

The other guest speaker for the dinner supporting the Ipswich Hospital Foundation is rugby league visionary John Ribot and the MC is poet Rupert McCall.

Corporal Roberts-Smith, who recently announced he was taking extended personal leave from the army, was awarded the VC in 2011 for exceptional bravery during the hunt for a senior Taliban commander.

In 2006, on his second tour of Afghanistan the SAS member was awarded the Medal for Gallantry for his actions as a patrol scout and sniper.

Swich On is a charity fundraising group formed by businessmen Brad Bulow, Brett McGrath, Matthew Bowden and Michael Kelly.

"We've been going for about 12 months and this is our third major fundraiser," Mr Bowden said. "A race day raised $10,000 for prostate cancer research and another for Beyond Blue raised $10,000."
