V8 Supercars teams look sharp at Willowbank

I MANAGED to get to Queensland Raceway to watch the V8 Supercar official shakedown yesterday for Queensland-based teams before the first round at the Clipsal 500.

Eleven cars were on track with Craig Lowndes doing his first laps since he broke his collarbone.

Lowndesy's new Caltex car looks the goods and Shane Van Gisbergen in Lowndesy's old Red Bull seemed fast.

The Tekno car with Will Davison on board was in all black livery so there's no news on their new sponsor yet.

Meanwhile, last Friday night was Lights out Grudge Match Racing, which has been absent on the Willowbank drag strip for some time.

The appearance of American Jeff Lutz brought the idea back.

What a night it was. Willowbank was buzzing.

Having Lutz in his 57 Chev go up against Ben Bray in his Corvette was the highlight of my night.

More drag action is on tomorrow night with round one of the Queensland Drag Racing Championship.

The highlight was the two veteran stagers throwing down in the Super Sedan final.

Tony Whyatt was able to drive by Rick Nielsen to take the win.

I love the format of the QRDC, with runs over three Chicago shootout style rounds with the best performer meeting in the final.

Round two is on March 19.

Dirt karts had a good roll-out after last week's washout.

Their first meeting for 2016 had seven rookies competing so the future of dirt karts is starting to look bright.

This week I will head out to Friday Night Drifts.

With the Australian Drift Grand Prix coming up on February 28, it will be some good practice time.

Tomorrow is the Ipswich Open sprints.

The Open sprints are the fastest sprinters at Ipswich.

Tomorrow at the drag strip is the first street series round for 2016.

We always have good support from Ipswich locals so hopefully the fans again turn up.
