Unwelcome, drunken houseguest tests patience of police

THE tolerance of police officers was stretched to breaking point when a drunk man refused to leave his girlfriend's address.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court this week, Bradley John Liesegang pleaded guilty to charges of assault or obstruct police and public nuisance.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick said police had been called to a Leichhardt address on October 18 in relation to a disturbance.

When they arrived, residents told police that Liesegang - the boyfriend of one of the occupants - was drunk and that they wanted him out of the house.

However when police tried to escort Liesegang off the property, he was argumentative and stalled as long as possible.

When the 48-year-old labourer eventually left, he pushed one of the officers out of the way.

After police warned him about his behaviour, they offered him a lift home.

Liesegang said he would rather walk home but instead stood outside the front of the house and continued to argue and swear at officers.

After police cautioned him several times to stop swearing and go home, he began screaming at them.

He was placed under arrest and struggled against the officers as they handcuffed him and took him to the watchhouse.

Defence lawyer Alexis Oxley said Liesegang had drank about nine beers before police arrived at the house that night.

She said her client spent four hours in the watchhouse as a consequence of his behaviour.

"When my client sobered up, he apologised to officers who were involved in the incident as well as the residents of the house," she said.

Liesegang was convicted and fined $500.
