Union members at CQMS Razer on strike for 24 hours

UNION workers at Maryborough's CQMS Razer began a 24-hour strike at 7am on Thursday morning.

Members of the Australia Manufacturers Workers Union, the Australian Workers Union and the Construction, Forestry Mining and Energy Union are participating in the stoppage.

AMWU central Queensland organiser Brad Hansen said about 60% of the mining equipment manufacturer's workforce had stood down from operations as the unions attempted to help renegotiate an enterprise bargaining agreement.

Mr Hansen said workers had helped the company survive through tough times, with CQMS Razer shutting down for several weeks in 2012 and 2013, leaving their workers without pay.

Most of the workers had then returned to a four-day working week instead of a five-day working week, causing more financial strain.

Mr Hansen said the workers had agreed to that because they were "aware of the current industry climate".

"The employees did that in good faith," he said.

But workers had not received a pay rise in 17 months and felt that they were entitled to some reciprocation for making sacrifices in order to help the company survive, Mr Hansen said.

"The claims put to the company are not excessive," he said.

Mr Hansen said the union representatives had met with members on Thursday morning and there would be an urgent scheduling of meetings to negotiate with CQMS Razer.

CQMS Razer has been contacted for a comment.
