Breathing a new $6.5 million SEA LIFE into UnderWater World

MOOLOOLABA'S premier tourist attraction will get a $2.5 million cash injection.

This will see new exhibits and animal species unveiled at UnderWater World next year.

The revitalised aquarium also will get a name change to mark becoming part of the world famous SEA LIFE brand.

The refurbishment is the second stage of a two-year $6.5 million project that will be finish by January 2014.

Stage two will begin this month at the 24-year-old attraction.

Head of Queensland attractions for Merlin Entertainments Group, James Thomas, said UnderWater World would be taken to a new level with the revitalisation.

"Merlin Entertainments Group acquired UnderWater World in 2012 and has committed to a multi-million-dollar investment program to ensure its future as must-do Sunshine Coast attraction," he said.

"Becoming part of the SEA LIFE brand will set the benchmark for some of the exciting exhibits that will open to the public in January."

The aquarium will feature nine new zones of discovery, iconic state-of-the-art displays, scores of new species including Australia's largest collection of sea jellies and many more to be revealed in coming months.

Late last year new features were unveiled as part of the first stage of revitalisation.

These included the new Ocean Tank and Walk Through with four new themed zones, a state-of-the-art water filtration system and a more extensive marine conservation program.
