'True believers' do it again

IT was the catchcry that won the Dragons the 2010 grand final against the Roosters.

And they called upon the same motto when no one gave them a chance in yesterday's Anzac clash against the same opponents in front of more than 40,000 fans at Allianz Stadium.

"For the true believers", the saying goes.

Former Dragons mentor and master coach Wayne Bennett dedicated the 2010 title win for the true believers.

Lock Dean Young made reference to the call after the red-and-whites somehow came back to win the un-winnable in the best game of the season.

Roosters five-eighth Braith Anasta looked to have given his side victory, slotting a penalty for an eight-point lead with less than six minutes remaining after Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward had been penalised for dissent.

But Dragons captain and halfback Ben Hornby never stopped believing and his shallow kick-off re-start was spot-on for leaping winger Jason Nightingale.

Two passes later Matt Prior scored out wide, although it looked like too little, too late.

But Nightingale came up with another big play on the final tackle after the restart, soccering wildly downfield where the Roosters were trapped in goal.

On the final play of the game after the line drop-out, try-scoring prop Michael Weyman off-loaded for second-rower Ben Creagh to steam over, Hornby slotting the conversion for a miracle 28-24 result.

Even the true believers were left shaking their heads.
