Truckie found not guilty of causing rider's death

THE truck driver charged with causing an accident that killed a teenage motorcyclist was found not guilty yesterday of dangerous driving causing death.

Ipswich District Court heard the truck Martin Charles Dewley was driving at 5.48am on August 27, 2010, at Wanora, north of Ipswich, was struck by a motorcycle ridden by 18-year-old Brayden Liam Playford.

Dewley had been accused of pulling out onto the Brisbane Valley Hwy while Playford's motorcycle was too close.

However, the court heard evidence Playford's bike might have been speeding, and a truck driver testified a bike went past him five minutes before the crash.

The court also heard Playford's visor had been tinted, and not meant for riding at night.

After a three-day trial and a short deliberation the jury, to audible gasps from the gallery, returned a verdict of not guilty.
