A TRUCK driver has been criticised for running a red light at a Toowoomba intersection.

Video uploaded onto Youtube shows the truck running the light in the rain at night.

Uploader Mattaviation747 said the truck was carrying an empty load and intentionally accelerated when the lights turned yellow.

"Not sure if you can hear it but as you see the lights turn red he downshifts and floors it beside me in a mad sprint to beat the lights," the uploader commented.

"The lights turn red before he even crosses the solid line!"

Head of RACQ's technical and safety policy Steve Spalding agrees running a red light is a dangerous manoeuvre.

"From a safety point of view, running red lights is extremely dangerous," he said.

"It leaves other motorists no chance.

"Especially with heavy vehicles, you may well take their life."

But Mr Spalding said it was significantly harder for large, heavy vehicles to stop quickly.

"It is just a questions of physics," he said.

He also said that people were increasingly treating yellow lights as a cue to speed up.

"It's the expectation to stop on a road if reasonably able to do so on an amber."
