Treasurer to target unemployment rate during Rocky visit

TREASURER Curtis Pitt is set to touch down in Rockhampton today, and one of his first goals is to address the increasing unemployment rate.

Mr Pitt (pictured) is here to discuss jobs at CQUniversity's CQIRP Conference Centre today from 10am.

His audience will include businesses and organisations who are ready to have their say on the development of employment policies.

Mr Pitt said the unemployment rate in the Fitzroy, which has increased to 7.2% this year from 5.7% in 2010, would be the local challenge.

"The youth unemployment rate in Fitzroy has increased in recent years to be 14.2% on average over the year to August 2015, largely in line with the state's average (14.0%)," he said.

"Positively though, the average labour force participation rate in Fitzroy over the year to June 2015 was 69.2%, higher than the state average of 65.3%.

"But we can always do more - we want to work with you to create local employment opportunities."

The Treasurer also said the region was experiencing a shift in its "employment landscape".

"While traditional industries such as agriculture and manufacturing continue to support significant jobs in the region, there has been substantial employment growth in mining and construction, as well as key service industries such as retail trade, accommodation, education and health care," he said.

"The boost in construction experienced in recent years is expected to taper off as the construction phase of the LNG projects winds down.

"While this structural shift will present the local economy with a significant challenge, there will also be some opportunities for growth."
