Dogwatch: Trainer in box seat to savour Gold Cup glory

IF weight of numbers is a yardstick, Peter Ruetschi is the trainer likely to win tomorrow night's City of Ipswich Gold Cup final.

Five heats were run last Saturday over 520 metres and Ruetschi won three of them.

Cervelo was a box one winner in 30.33, Sheza Keen Size scored from "the red'' in 30.35 and Hougenie saluted from box two in 30.56.

The other heat winners were Elusive Dream, from box two for Col Graham in 30.53, and Glenn Smith's Simpatico in 30.61 from trap eight.

"To have two heat winners running really quick times, that was so exciting,'' Ruetschi said.

"I'd love to win the Cup for Len Antonio who is a real stalwart of the Ipswich club and has been of tremendous help to me during the very difficult times which have gone on for most of this year with racing officialdom.''

Antonio owns Cervelo and Sheza Keen Size.

"Cervelo sits down in the boxes, then springs up when he hears the lure,'' Ruetschi explained.

"I was worried about that initially but it hasn't affected his form. I don't think he's badly boxed out there in seven, he's capable of sweeping around the pack.''

The trainer says Sheza Keen Size's liking for the Ipswich track is a big help to her chances.

"She beat Cash in Motion in the Ipswich Futurity recently and has a better record at Ipswich than Albion Park,'' he said.

Ruetschi doesn't rule out Hougenie as a winning chance.

"She's more of a 600 to 720 metres bitch. But if she is within three or four lengths of the leaders, look out for her to be storming home. ''

Inside draw challenge

SINCE the Ipswich Cup distance was increased from 512 to 520 metres in 2002, there's only been one winner of the race from box one. That was the Stephen Rolph trained Potsdam in 2012.

The Kevin Ellis trained Macnivek has box one tomorrow night. Ubet's Gerard Daffy reports good support for the dog.

"When we put the fixed odds up on Wednesday, he was $8.00. There's been plenty of money for him and he's into $5.50,'' Daffy said.

"We installed Sheza Keen Size as the favourite at $2.80 but have since eased her out to $3.10.''

Bitches don't have a great record in the Cup final.

Regal Lauryn won for Len Antonio and Tony Brett in 2013.

Ellie's Diamond for John and Lil Edwards was the previous bitch to win the Cup and that was back in 2006.

Tomorrow night five of the eight runners are bitches. They are Hougenie, Sheza Keen Size, Simpatico, Apatite and Cash in Motion.

Cup tips

CUP racecaller John Brasch is tipping Hougenie to beat Sheza Keen Size.

Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club manager Merv Page says the race is wide open with plenty of depth.

Page selects Macnivek to beat Cash in Motion.

I'm going for Simpatico to beat Sheza Keen Size.
