Trad says Deebing Creek Mission's heritage will be respected

DEPUTY Premier and Planning Minister Jackie Trad has reassured Ipswich's indigenous community that the cultural significance of the former Deebing Creek Mission site will be respected in assessment of the proposed development.

The indigenous community has opposed any development on what is left of the heritage listed former mission site at Deebing Heights, saying at least two cemeteries and other burial sites exist over the 114ha of land.

More than 100 Aboriginal protesters marched through central Ipswich on Friday and Ipswich City Council took a stand on Tuesday asking the developer to reconsider its development application.

While Deebing Developments, and more recently Australand, have proposed a 600-home development on the site since 2008, the Aboriginal community has complained about lack of consultation on plans for the sacred site.

The development comes under the State Government's Ripley Valley Priority Development Area (PDA) Development Scheme as a priority urban growth corridor.

A spokeswoman for Ms Trad said the development scheme stated that any proposed development in this area must respect cultural and heritage values and specifically identified the presence of the Deebing Creek Mission site.

"We are advised that Ipswich City Council as the development assessment authority within the PDA has requested further information from the proponent to demonstrate that the proposed development does not impact on the state heritage listing, including the cultural heritage values," she said.

"Ultimately, Ipswich City Council are the assessing authority and they will make the decision to approve, approve with conditions, or refuse this development application."

Council's Planning chairman Paul Tully said the council was assessing the development as delegate on behalf of the state government, and a decision could be several months away.

However Cr Tully made it clear in Tuesday's meeting that his view was that the current development application was unacceptable.
