Toyota LandCruiser 70 getting even tougher this year
TOYOTA'S old stager LandCruiser 70 will receive key updates for the 2017 model year.
For many Aussies the LandCruiser 70 Series is as much an icon of our rural areas as a dusty Outback pub, so hearing Toyota Australia is still ploughing time and effort into bettering the breed will be welcome news.
The upgraded LandCruiser 70 Series, due to arrive in the final quarter of this year, retains the current model's 4.5-litre V8 turbo-diesel engine with a manual-only transmission.
Toyota says it has been tested over 100,000km of Australian roads, with around 70% of that being off the bitumen, from corrugated dirt roads to rugged cattle properties with severe washouts.
Focusing on the best-selling single cab-chassis, Toyota Australia said the upgraded model will be stronger with a stiffer new frame with thicker side rails, which helps reduce vibration and improve handling and stability. Suspension has been retuned to match with local engineers adjusting spring and damper rates.
The Aussie engineers also tuned new safety features such as stability and traction control over dirt roads, rural properties and country highways.
All 70 Series variants - single and double cab-chassis, wagon and troop carrier - will come equipped with these safety features as well as hill-start assist control, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution and cruise control.
Toyota Australia said it expected the single cab model to attract the maximum five-star safety rating thanks to five airbags: driver, front passenger, curtain-shields and driver's knee airbags.
