Totem stumbles with seafood in Wild West elimination

IGNORING the advice of one of the country's top chefs has sent the latest MasterChef contestant home.

Totem Douangmala was eliminated tonight after serving up two dishes of raw mussels, despite warnings from chef Matt Stone.

The South Australian student was in the bottom three along with Rishi Desai and Christina Batista.

They were each asked to cook two dishes at Stone's Perth restaurant Greenhouse.

Douangmala said cooking two proteins - mussels and ox heart - was too much of a juggling act.

The 23-year-old said he has learned from his mistake and hopes to get a second chance through some industry work experience.

"I absolutely got slammed by Matt Stone and that's something I'll carry with me," he said.

"I most definitely will be listening to my chefs and taking directions."

He also hopes to one day release a cook book featuring dishes from his Laos heritage.

The women continue to dominate this year's competition, with only five men now remaining on the show.

Douangmala tips Liliana Battle or Batista to win.

"Liliana a very honest person and very honest cook," he said.

"Christina is a great person. She does get flustered at times, but she's had a hard life. I'd love for her to win it."

On Sunday night, Heaven and Hell week starts with a mystery box challenge.

MasterChef continues tomorrow and Sunday at 7.30pm on Ten.
