Top ten car glitches that leave you stranded

FLAT batteries and flat tyres are the two most common causes of roadside breakdowns in Queensland.

The RACQ has reported that out of 880,000 calls for assistance in the last year, 50% were for motorists who had a flat battery.

More than 70,000 motorists called RACQ for help in changing a flat tyre.

RACQ spokesman Steve Spalding said it was not surprising to see flat batteries at the top of the list.

"Modern cars have a lot of electrical accessories which can easily drain the battery," Mr Spalding said.

"Leaving your vehicle's lights on overnight, going away on holidays and leaving your car sitting idle in the garage are common mistakes that can also cause your battery to flatten."

Despite the relative lack of complexity in changing a tyre, it seems many motorists still aren't game to unpack the wheel brace and jack.

It seems advancements in remote key technology aren't reducing incidents of people locking themselves out of their own car either, with accidental lock out coming in at third on the list.

"Even though modern cars are technically very complex, we're proud to say we get nine out of 10 motorists straight back on the road after a breakdown," Mr Spalding said.

RACQ top ten vehicle breakdown causes:

  1. Flat or faulty batteries
  2. Flat tyres
  3. Locked out
  4. Engine issues
  5. Fuel and related engine issues
  6. Radiator issues
  7. Alternator and related electrical issues
  8. Starter motor and related electrical issues
  9. Ignition issues
  10. Wiring or connector issues.
