Man used Facebook to groom 14-y-o girl

A TOOWOOMBA man had used Facebook to groom a 14-year-old girl who he ultimately met up with, the city's District Court has heard.

Triston John Moore, 21, had separated from his partner and had taken to using social media sites in July last year, the court heard.

After he met the 14-year-old girl through Facebook, he had exchanged explicit photographs with her and eventually met with her.

Crown prosecutor Shontelle Petrie said Moore had helped the girl run away from home and during one such meeting he had touched her indecently.

When the girl texted him that she wanted to run away again, the then 20-year-old had met her in a Toowoomba park but he had fled when the girl's step-father arrived and confronted him.

Moore pleaded guilty grooming and indecently dealing with a child under 16.

His barrister David Jones said the offending period was just two weeks and that the manipulation had been from both parties.

Judge Craig Chowdhury sentenced Moore to 12 months in jail but ordered the term be suspended in full for two years and placed him on 12 months probation.
