Toddler remains critical

A YOUNG girl who nearly drowned in a backyard swimming pool at Redbank Plains is still in a critical condition.

The 17-month-old was plucked unconscious from the water about 5.45pm Monday.

A bystander performed CPR on the girl until paramedics arrived and she was rushed to the Mater Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.

She remains in the Brisbane hospital’s intensive care unit.

A hospital spokeswoman said the girl was in a critical but stable condition.

Initial police investigations suggested the girl entered the pool area through an unsecured gate.

Members of Hannah’s Foundation have offered support to the family of the girl.

Co-founder Katherine Plint urged pool owners to be aware of pending law changes regarding the fencing of older-style three-sided pools.
