Housemate harmony: space will keep the friendship fresh
No-one knows who he is but The Observer has a man on the ground in Gladstone sniffing out stories of love, lust and everything in between.
AFTER a search that seemed to take forever; Sophie and I finally moved into our new place. The old wooden house felt like it could be haunted, so we affectionately called it "Ghost House".
It was exactly what we were looking for. Plans were made for what would go where long before we moved in. One priority was adopting a dog and not long after we moved in "Moss" became a member of the Ghost House family.
But the highest priority was, no matter the hardships that came with living together; we remained friends.
Moving in with your besty can strain friendships. In my rental past, I've come close to losing friends but this time I prepared. The Ghost House would have rules to keep our friendship golden:
Embrace Space: Sophie's no.1 concern was that I would hear her do no 2. Just because you live together doesn't mean you need to do everything together. Space will keep the friendship fresh.
Bill Chills: Plan how the bills are going to be paid before they arrive. Knowing what will be paid in black and white will keep you out of the red.
Clean Machine: I'll admit. I'm not the cleanest person to live with. Plan cleaning days and share the load.
Respect Effect: Know each other's sleep patterns, moods and belongings and respect them. All the stuff you learnt in the playground.
Food Rude: I ate the last Tim Tam last night and Sophie still hasn't forgiven me. Share your groceries but never under any circumstance eat the last of the other person's Tim Tams.
Sophie, Moss and I haven't run into any problems yet.
Ghost House has very much gone from being a house to a home.
Moving in with friends is an exciting part of growing up.
It can show sides of your friends you may not have seen before.
But when the friendship becomes strained, have patience and remind yourself why you were friends in the first place.
