Thursday show holiday stays

NEXT year's Ipswich Show Day holiday will be on Thursday, May 6.

Ipswich City Council endorsed the Show Society's chosen date this week, and will now apply to the Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations Minister to lock the public holiday in.

Mayor Paul Pisasale said the Ipswich Show holiday was traditionally held on Thursdays except for a three year period in the mid 1990's when a Friday holiday was trialled.

“The Thursday Show Day holiday returned in 1999 and has remained ever since with little comment from business houses or the community,” Cr Pisasale said.

“The Ipswich Show Society clearly believes Thursday is the most beneficial day for the operation of the show and states publicly that the success or failure of the event relates to the date for the public holiday.

“In the two years where council did not accept the recommendation of the Ipswich Show Society, there was an enormous amount of petitioning and public debate.”
