Thor: Big stars choose Sydney event over Gold Coast premier
THE Gold Coast may have snagged the Australian premiere of Queensland-filmed Thor: Ragnarok, but there will not be a star of the Marvel blockbuster in sight.
The Marvel and Screen Queensland-hosted preview will be held at an invitation-only gala at Event Cinemas Robina on October 13. The film will be released in cinemas across the country on October 26.
While director Taika Waititi will jet in to make an appearance, none of the movie's main cast is scheduled to attend, including Aussie Chris Hemsworth, who stars as the film's titular hero, and Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo. They will walk the red carpet at a special event screening of Thor: Ragnarok in Sydney two days later.
The upcoming instalment of the Thor franchise was the first feature film in the Marvel cinematic universe to be shot in the Southern Hemisphere. It set up shop on the Gold Coast last year, taking over the entirety of Village Roadshow Studios from July until the end of October. It shut down Brisbane's CBD for four days in August.
But, despite Hemsworth singing the state's praises and dubbing the reception he and co-star Tom Hiddleston received from fans as one that "doesn't happen anywhere else in the world", he will not be in town for the screening.
The snub follows the screening of Queensland-filmed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on the Gold Coast earlier this year, which was not attended by any of the stars, such as Cairns-born Brenton Thwaites.
