OPINION: Offences against senior citizens most heinous acts
THERE are not too many crimes that go against everything we stand for as individuals and as a community.
But offences against our senior citizens are up there with the most heinous of acts.
It takes a low and desperate person to break into a pensioner's home and demand money of them.
It takes an even lower person to then shoot the person at point blank range when they attempt to stand up to their attackers.
No doubt their parent's would be immensely proud of them.
But all too many times people like that living in our community get the benefit of the doubt when they are hauled before a court.
Their lawyers pull out the whole, they had a tough upbringing, a family member sexually abused them, or the good-old chestnut that never fails, they have a problem with drugs and alcohol.
What poor, feeble and tired excuses.
But excuses nonetheless the courts keep falling for time and time again.
I think it is safe to say society on a whole is sick to death of this small percentage of the population, their endless excuses and their endless chances.
Maybe it is time to bring in a three strike policy for habitual offenders?
But no doubt the bleeding heart brigade will knock that on the head quick smart.
