MP's son charged after threatening women with taser

THE son of Noosa MP Glen Elmes had been drinking for about 12 hours when he threatened two women with a taser in Hastings St, a court has been told.

Kristin Wayne Elmes, 23, pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon when he faced Noosa Magistrates Court yesterday.

Magistrate Rod Madsen heard Elmes had been drinking since about lunchtime on the day of the incident last December.

He had little recollection of what happened when he became involved in an argument with two women he did not know.

While the women were not struck, the taser was switched on and "sparking" and scared the pair to the point where one of them screamed for help.

Elmes' lawyer, Alicia Thomas, said the young man had begun counselling as he had been suicidal shortly before the incident and was taking medication.

Mr Madsen labelled Elmes a "drunk and a deadbeat" before placing him on 13 months' probation and ordering the taser be destroyed.
