Catching Fire claims top spot at weekend box office

THE Hunger Games: Catching Fire has claimed the top spot at the Australian box office over the weekend, raking in $12.475 million.

The second film in the dystopian teen fantasy franchise, Catching Fire grossed 34% more than the first film's opening weekend last year.

The film, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson as two teens who are forced to compete in televised to-the-death battles, screened across 579 screens nationwide and knocked Johnny Knoxville's Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa off the top of the leader board.

Overseas, the film grossed more than $161 million in the US and $146.6 million internationally across 63 countries.

The film is expected to dominate the box office for the next few weeks.
